Grounding: Why We Need This Nature Connection
Grounding, sometimes known as earthing is a therapeutic practice in which you engage in activities that “ground” or electrically reconnect you to the Earth.
The Earth is like a massive battery that has a natural, mild electrical charge—a unique type of energy found beneath the surface. Almost everything in the electrical world is connected to it for safety and stability, whether it’s an electric power plant or your refrigerator. The term “grounded” refers to this.
Being grounded might refer to one of two things:
- Being fully aware of your surroundings and/or being fully present in your body
- Feeling a sense of belonging to the earth.
We’ve all been grounded at some point in our lives. We have a sense of being “at home.” However, this is a one-time event.
Fortunately, there are grounding techniques that can support us in becoming and remaining rooted in our bodies. Here’s a rundown of some of the advantages of Grounding:
- It aids in the normalization of cortisol levels, which aids in the improvement of sleep, pain relief, and stress reduction.
- “It combats positively charged free radicals formed by inflammatory elements in response to damage, infection, trauma, or stress,” according to some companies.
- By lowering red blood cell clumping, it helps improve circulation and cardiovascular health.
- It can help to reduce the damage of exercise on some muscles.
- And, it has a large potential to improve your overall mood.
But how is Grounding done?
Try going barefoot outside for forty minutes and notice how it affects your discomfort or stress level. For better conduction of the Earth’s electrons, sit, stand, or walk on grass, sand, dirt, or concrete, ideally moist. All of these are conductive surfaces from which your body can collect electrons from the Earth. Conductive materials include wood, asphalt, and vinyl.
Ideally, you’ll want to keep the Earthing experience going and incorporate it into your everyday routine. Indoors, an Earthing system such as sleep systems, Earthing mats, or body bands connected via a wire to a properly grounded electrical outlet inside a residence or to a ground rod outside is the simplest method. These devices use carbon or silver mesh to conduct Earth’s energy and can be used in bed, while watching TV or reading, or at a desk.
